Let me begin my stating that I am a very lazy individual. My favorite thing to do is sit in a big comfy chair with a Mountain Dew and a good book. Getting into the habit of exercising is going to be an obstacle. I've been using an iPhone app called My Fitness Pal that allows me to keep track of what I eat every day and my total calorie intake as well as what exercises I do and the number of calories that I burn. I recently updated to a new iPhone which means that it keeps track of how far I have walked and the number of steps I take each day. Based on goals I set, it gives me an ideal number of calories to reach. At the end of the day it shows you how close you are to meeting your goal and when I come in under goal it's encouraging. Having a daily diary entry helps keep me honest and (as a undergrad psychology major) I know how much the immediate reward of coming in under goal helps the overall effort.
So far, the most difficult part is getting the motivation to work out. The healthier eating part is slightly easier as I have been a vegetarian for the last 13 years and my main goal there is to eat less junk and balance my nutrition. In my case, this means adding more sources of protein to my diet. I'm sure many zany exploits in the world of food will follow.
